As a ravenous book reader myself, I know from experience that readers do judge a book by its cover!
A book cover artist focuses on the emotion of the written word and in turn relays that to the buyer/reader. The writers themselves are more concerned with the details inside the cover (as it should be).
A poorly designed book cover will make a potential reader question the value of the content inside. A strongly designed cover captures the buyers eye and therefore their interest. If you capture a readers interest then book sales are assured!
